Fun things. . .

Emma is officially potty-trained. I'm not really sure when it happened, but I realized that she hasn't had an accident in a really long time. She still needs help getting her pants up around her rear, but I told her that's normal and that she'll probably struggle with that her entire life. OK, I didn't tell her that, but the thought crossed my mind. Today, we were at Mollie's house. Emma had to poop, but every time we went to the potty, she would lose the urge. Finally, I told her to poop in the grass. She did. Mollie thinks she's leaving her mark. So far, she's pooped in Barbara's yard, our yard and now Mollie's. I just think it's great that she's not doing it in her diaper.
On the topic of poop, lately Emma has wanted to turn around and look at it when she's done. Last week, she turned around and proclaimed, "Mommy, it's a Y!!" Nevermind that it was a V, it was funny.
Emma and I were in the kitchen the other day. She looked out the window and saw a bird on the telephone wire. "Mommy, do you see that bird way up there?" "Yes, Emma, I do. What do you think he's doing up there?" "Um, I think he's not flying." Good observation, Emma. Very good.
While eating fruit one morning, "Mommy, it's a trapezoid." Her mango was cut in the shape of a trapezoid. Thanks Grandma and Grandpa for the Shape-O ball! It's fun to hear her tell us her shapes!
Kevin traveled a few weeks ago, one week after we had moved into our home. I woke up the first morning he was gone and walked into Emma's room. There was a dying cockroach about 6 inches from her bed. So gross. I flushed him down the toilet. For several days, Emma would talk about the "dross tockroach" that mommy had flushed down the toilet.
We offically have a maid. She cleans our house and does all the laundry and ironing. We don't have a dryer yet, so she hangs everything on the line. She's really sweet. Her name is Rine. Emma loves her. Last week I left Emma with her for about an hour and a half while I went to class. They played and Emma helped her make lunch. Yes, she cooks too. Only once so far, but she did such a great job that I might have her do it more often. I bought a pineapple the other day and had great intentions of cutting it up. Well, Rine did it for me. It's still a little weird for me to have someone in my home every morning, but I think we're getting used to it. I mean, who wouldn't want someone else to do their laundry and ironing and dishes and clean bathrooms?? Yes, yes, I am very much enjoying parts of this culture!
More to come. . .
PS We don't have internet in our home, so I have to go elsewhere to blog and check email. Please be patient with me because it's been really hard to find the time, energy, desire, etc. Internet is a very convenient thing to have in your home and I am missing it very much. Thanks for hanging in there with us! We miss you all!

THANKS for the updates! Your house looks great--and I am so glad everything came to Brazil smoothly--especially the coffee!! Will you ever have Internet in your house? Just curious. I'm impressed that Emma knows her letters and shapes--especially in different contexts-- poop, food, etc!! So glad that potty training has occurred! Have a great day! We miss you! Love, Julie

emma is so brilliant. :)
i love that you are getting to enjoy the help of a maid/cook/kid watcher. living cross culturally, that can help keep you at a normal level of sanity - a few less things to cope with in the adjustment period. enjoy!! we are in a different city right now and i am REALLY missing our a-yi...she just makes like managable.
