Back in December, I found a beginner's cross stitch at WalMart. I wasn't sure if Emma was ready for it, but I picked it up anyway because it made me reminisce. When I was little, I remember begging my mom to do cross stitch. I learned how to crochet, sew and knit, too. I'm not sure when I learned or from whom I learned. I vaguely remember going to a crochet class at the back of Aten's Department Store in Goodland. I can still picture how the store was set up, with clothes in the front, a small jewelry counter in the middle and the shoe section at the back. There was a small room just past the shoe section and I think I learned how to crochet a small sock there. Cross stitching was my favorite thing to do, though. I was so excited when Emma said she wanted to learn. She did a great job, even though it took her over a week to finish. She stitched about one or two lines a day and that was about all she could handle. I was really proud of her, though. I was also really proud that she wanted to do it for somebody. . . Grandma! We worked really hard and finished her first cross stitch just in time for Christmas!
You can just see the pride on her face! She was so happy to have made something and it felt so good to her to give it to a very, very special person!
