1st Semester Classical Conversations. . .

I can't believe the first semester of 1st grade is already over! Emma is such a fun student and I'm really loving this year's curriculum. We started off the year by studying magnets in science and that just seemed to put her in a great mood for the entire semester! No really, she's still enjoying magnets and seems to have a genuine love for learning! Her reading skills have skyrocketed and a day doesn't go by that I don't find her somewhere reading a book!
One of our favorite school activities is participating in the Milan Classical Conversations community. Every Monday we leave the house around 8:30 and drive a little over 20 minutes to Milan. We spend the morning there and are usually home by 1pm at the latest. Sometimes we stay for lunch; sometimes we head home right after class is over at noon. It's an intense 3-hours while we're there. Adri goes to the nursery and Emma and I sit in class, memorizing facts in several different subjects. I am absolutely amazed at her ability and desire to learn. It just seems so easy for her to retain knowledge! She especially loves the science experiments and geography. The last six weeks we studied music, so she learned to play the tin whistle and loved it! I actually enjoyed hearing her learn it because she picked it up so well! Here are a few memories from the first six weeks of CC.
Learning about speed of objects in orbit. . .
Playing Duck, Duck, Goose after lunch one day. . .
Emma's cousin Alexandra came to visit our CC in September
Mrs. Dodd is a fun, creative teacher and Emma and I both love her!
Another science experiment. . .
Fun books to help the learning process. . .
Studying the planets: creating a solar system with buttons!!
Working hard. . .
CC Community in Milan. . .
Yet another science experiment involving rockets! FUN!
JUMP!!
Time for MUSIC!
Mrs. Michel taught most of the lessons for music theory. I actually got to take a few kids and teach them how to play the tin whistle. I love that age group!
Learning the names of the notes on the staff. . .
Overall I have been so happy with the experience we've had at CC. I love the way Emma is learning and that she's having fun doing it! She retains so much and is eager to study during the week. Every Monday she gets to give a 2-3 minute presentation to her class. She does amazingly well for being the daughter of someone who loathes getting up in front of people! Good thing she's also the daughter of someone who does it very well! I love that she's getting public speaking experience so early. The teachers have been great about providing encouragement and tips for excellent presentations. I'm looking forward to second semester at CC and so is Emma!
